Iceland: Day 2

After a day to Snæfellsnes National Park, it was time for day two, a tour along the south coast of Iceland. The guide for the day was an American who had moved to Iceland later in life. Once again, the tour was from the company Gateway to Iceland. He espoused the greatness of Scandinavian universal health care and social safety nets to the American tourists, who could only nod in agreement.

The first stop was at Skogafoss waterfall, which can only be described as other worldly.

From there, a stop was made at a natural crevice of sorts, at which Game of Thrones was shot in the past. For this, there simply are no words.

From here, the next stop was Solheimajökull glacier. Due to climate change, this glacier is melting rapidly. Sadly, tourists in the near future may not have a glacier to view at all.

At this point, the tour guide asked if we’d like to see a glacier lagoon. The answer was a resounding YES. So it was off to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. We were led in a boat to see the also melting glacier.

The Italian tour guide (due to its small population, the tourist sector employs thousands of Europeans) even let us eat ice.

Finally, it was the long drive back to Reykjavic. But not without one more waterfall picture. The name of this one is Seljalandsfoss.
