Helsinki, Finland: Day 1

Finland, the only country in Scandinavia that I had yet not visited. Thus, I had to scratch the itch and complete that part of my global résumé. I had three days, so my plan was to spend two days in Helsinki and one in Estonia.

I flew into Helsinki, and from there took a train into the city center.

This was my first view after arriving.

I had a short walk to my hotel, Hotel Kamp. The structure of the ground is such that you hear every time your wheel crosses from one stone to the next.

The first stop was Market Square. Interestingly, there weren’t many people around. I’m not sure if this speaks to Scandinavian culture or the odd location. The Presidential Palace is yellow, my favorite color.

Nearby is the Helisinki Cathedral.

Since I had arrived in late afternoon, it was time to eat. The problem was, I wasn’t particularly hungry. So I decided to eat some dessert. I ate at Fazer Cafe, on the 8th floor of the department store Stockmann. I’m not sure what exactly I bought, but it was great.

This was the end of my first day in Helsinki. Day two would be a ferry ride to Tallinn, Estonia.
