Morelia, Mexico: Day 2

After a long day traveling back and forth to the Monarch Butterfly Reserve, I had one day left to explore Morelia.

Of course, there was a church.

I then walked to a square; squares with fountains are ever-present in colonial Mexican cities. One thing I’ve noted in my travels in Latin America is that people take their families out to the city, and meet others there. Whereas in America, people invite people to their homes.

This foliage was surreal.

An aqueduct, a phenomenon of science that I’ve always found fascinating.

Unfortunately, this was the only daylight I would experience, as rain clouds soon approached. So I headed to a (slightly) indoor destination, the Museo Regional de Michoacán. Like many museums in Mexico, it is canvassed in beautiful murals.

Unfortunately, rain was still falling, so I went to the Centro Cultural Clavijero. Centro Culturales are common in Mexican cities, they tend to host local art. Of course, there were murals; these ones were mind-bendingly spectacular.

Unfortunately, the rain was not halting, so I decided I would have to walk as this was a moment in life that would probably not be repeated. The first stop was the sign of the city name, which is ubiquitous in Mexican cities.

Yet another square, with beautiful flowers.

And another church.

And another.

And then just decided to walk randomly about. Like this meandering alley.

It turns out that this wasn’t just any ordinary alley, but the Callejón del Romance (the alley of romance).

Finally, it was time for dinner, once again at chef Cynthia Martinez’s La Conspiración de 1809. The lighting fixture was fascinating.

The starter was a tortilla soup with a bean base. Succulent.

The entrée was a quarter chicken with vegetables.

The dessert was chocolate bread with a side of vanilla ice cream.

This wrapped up a wonderful trip to Michoacán. Hopefully I can go again in the future to see Pátzcuaro and Janitizio, particularly for Día de los Muertos.
