Sierra Gorda, Mexico: Day 2, Part 4

After an already remarkable day, it was time for yet some more touring. After the unique experience of being the first tourists to visit Las Pozas, it was back to the regularly scheduled tour. The destination was Concá, a municipality so small it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page.

The first stop was the sign of the town, ubiquitous to Mexico. Note the accent mark over the letter A, what attention to detail.

Then we approached the uniquely beautiful entryway to a Franciscan mission, Misión de San Miguel Concá.

Then we walked in. The frontal texture is something I’ve never seen before. Not as large as other churches, but quaint and magnificent nonetheless. The best part: zero tourists.

Then we headed to a famous tree, El Árbol Milenario. The tree is 1000 years old with a trunk diameter of 72 feet.

From here we headed to Jalpan de Serra, a municipality of 22,000 where tourists usually stay. By now it was night, so the central church Mision Jalpa was nicely lit.

We ate at a restaurant just across from the church, Sierra Bonita. I had a huarache, which translates to sandal in English. It was fine, but I wish it had black beans.

From here it was a 45 minute drive through blinding fog in pitch black dark back to Pinal de Amoles. What a perfect way to end the day.

Many thanks for Bernardo of BND tours for organizing the day. He can be reached at +52 441 122 8989.
